by BONES, Tensai Okamura, 岡村天斎, Nokiya (Illustrations), 野奇夜, Saika Hasumi
Ten years ago, the mysterious Hell’s Gate suddenly materialized in the middle of Tokyo, and the stars of the night sky were obscured in darkness. In their place, new stars emerged, each corresponding to an individual endowed with supernatural abilities. Devoid of emotion and conscience, these powerful killers have come to be known as Contractors.
But most people know nothing of the Contractors in their midst, and high-schooler Kana Shinoh is no exception. Still struggling to pick up the pieces after her father’s death last year, Kana has never troubled herself with the rumors about Hell’s Gate. That is, until she spots her father in the street one day. Determined to prove her father is still alive, Kana begins her search, but her mission is attracting some rather dangerous attention. Fortunately, she is rescued from the clutches of death by Hei, the most wanted Contractor in Tokyo. Though he is unsympathetic to her situation, Hei agrees to protect her as she searches for her father. But just how much should she trust the Contractor known as the Black Reaper? Summary from Goodreads.
My thoughts so far…
Okay I’m not going to lie I would recommend this manga only to people who have seen the anime first. From the start it was presented in a way that implied the reader should already know the characters, their abilities, and how they all connect. I say this because I figured out that this story actually occurs a year after the end of the anime. So it’s not the original story really. Now keeping all that I’ve just said in mind, if you haven’t seen the anime and read this manga you may feel confused. But aside from this fact Darker Than Black is a cool interesting story.
Though sometimes I feel like it’s lacking in characters. Although I like how they people called contractors gain super powers that they can use but it comes with a price. Including losing your soul. Now Kana is a girl who sort of gets caught up in the world on contractors. How did she stumble across this? Well she’s still grieving over the death of her father that happened last year. When one day she’s sure she sees him in the city so she desperately tries to find him. Her efforts to find him lead her to confrontations with contractors. With one contractor on her side who is both using her and protecting her Kana begins to get to the truth. But the question is, is she ready for the truth? I’m going to keep reading the manga to find out because I would like to know what happens next. Maybe it will all become clear as the story goes on. I’ll find out.
